Guelph United nips St. Catharines to remain unbeaten

GUELPH – Guelph United remained undefeated in League1 Ontario Men’s Premier soccer play as they edged the St. Catharines Roma Wolves 2-1 Sunday at the Centennial Bowl.

Jared Agyemang opened the scoring for United in the 16th minute of the game.

That goal stood as the lone goal of the game until both teams scored in the second half’s stoppage time.

Camilo Vasconcelos put the hosts ahead by two before Jordale Byers immediately cut the gap back to one for St. Catharines. Byers played a total of four minutes in the game.

Carter Robart had the win in net for United while Carson Provenzano was in goal for St. Catharines.

United is tied for fourth in the league at 5-0-3 while Sigma FC is at 5-1-3.

United is also one of three unbeaten teams, the others being first-place Blue Devils FC of Oakville who are at 6-0-3 and third-place Vaughan Azzurri who are at 6-0-2. Scrosoppi FC of Milton are tied for the league lead at 7-2-0.

United and Sigma are to meet Wednesday at Mississauga’s Paramount Fine Foods Centre at 9 p.m. and are to host Vaughan Azzurri Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Centennial Bowl.
