Guelph United Premier Men win opener on penalty-shot goal

A goal on a penalty shot midway through the second half lifted Guelph United to a 1-0 victory over Hamilton United in their League1 Ontario Men’s Premier Division soccer league opener Saturday night at Tim Hortons Field.

Jared Agyemang, the team’s leading scorer last season and one of nine players back from last season, sank his penalty shot in the game’s 66th minute.

The teams battled evenly throughout the match with each also being shown the yellow card three times, all but one of those card displays coming in the second half.

Next outing for Guelph United is to be next Sunday at 8 p.m. against Vaughan Azzurri at Vaughan’s North Maple Field.

That game is to be the second on a Guelph United-Vaughan Azzurri doubleheader as the Women’s Premier teams from both clubs are to meet there at 4 p.m.

Azzurri Premier Men are to start their season this Sunday in Barrie against the Simcoe County Rovers.
