Hespeler Shamrocks downed by New Hamburg Firebirds

BADEN – The Hespeler Shamrocks were handed a 5-1 setback by the New Hamburg Firebirds in a physical Provincial Junior Hockey League game Friday night at the Wilmot Recreation Complex.

The teams combined for a total of 28 penalties and 54 minutes in penalties in the game. Both went 1-for-7 on their power plays.

New Hamburg led 2-0 at the end of the first period before netting the lone goal of the second. The Firebirds extended their lead to five goals in the third period before Andrew Harris scored a power-play goal for the Shamrocks with 7:48 to go in the game. Mitchell Smilsky and Riley Panagapka assisted on the play.

New Hamburg received single goals from Owen Fischer, Jake Thompson, Owen Bruder, Carter Niall and Brendan George. Owen Sculthorp assisted on three of the goals while Matt Domm had two assists and Fischer, Justin McManus, Kaden Eichler and Bruder each had one.

The Firebirds outshot the Shamrocks 49-35.

Lucas Hillert had 44 saves for Hespeler while Braeme Noye had 34 for New Hamburg.

Woodstock Navy Vets lead the Doherty Division at 5-0-0-0 while New Hamburg is second at 3-2-0-0. The Shamrocks follow at 2-2-0-0 while Tavistock Braves are at 2-3-0-0, Norwich Merchants are at 1-2-1-0, Wellesley Applejacks are at 1-2-0-0 and Paris Titans are at 1-3-0-0.

The Shamrocks are to host Paris Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
