Hespeler Shamrocks drop playoff opener to Wellesley

WELLESLEY – The Hespeler Shamrocks opened their PJHL Doherty Division quarter-final playoff series with a 4-2 loss to the Wellesley Applejacks Wednesday night at the Wellesley Community Centre.

The Applejacks had a two-goal lead before the game was seven minutes old.

Wellesley led 3-2 at the end of the second period.

Riley Panagapka scored a pair of power-play goals for the Shamrocks while Justin George assisted on both of them. Alex Spencer and Trent Collins each had one assist.

The Applejacks received single goals from Kyle Baker, Jake L’Heureux, Isiah Katsube and Adam Hoff. Carson Wickie assisted on three of the goals while Hoff, Evan Silveira, Koby Seiling, Baker and Justin McCombs each had one assist.

Wellesley outshot the Shamrocks 44-30, including a 31-15 advantage through the first two periods. Hespeler went 2-for-9 on its power play while the Applejacks went 1-for-6.

Tyson Gustaw had 40 saves for Hespeler while Noah Bender had 28 for Wellesley.

The Shamrocks had finished the regular season seventh in the Doherty Division at 5-32-3-1 while Wellesley was second at 31-7-2-2.

The Applejacks won six of the seven regular-season games with the Shamrocks while the other game Oct. 23 at Hespeler finished in a 2-2 tie. Wellesley outscored the Shamrocks 34-11 in the season series.

Second game of the best-of-seven divisional quarter-final is to go Friday at Wellesley. Game time is 8:30 p.m.

Third game is slated to be played at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Sunday starting at 3:30 p.m. while the fourth game is to be played there March 15 at 8:30 p.m.
