Hespeler Shamrocks edged in Woodstock in season opener

WOODSTOCK – The Hespeler Shamrocks were nipped 3-2 by the Woodstock Navy Vets as they opened their Provincial Junior Hockey League season Friday night at the Woodstock District Community Complex.

While the Shamrocks scored both of their goals in the second period, Woodstock connected for a goal in each of the periods for the win.

Goals by Riley Panagapka and Boden White a little over five minutes apart gave the Shamrocks a 2-1 lead with six minutes to go in the second period.

However, Guelph native Sam Barry tied it for Woodstock just over two and a half minutes later and Jake Phelan fired home the game-winner early in the third period.

Alex Spencer, Ryan Fraser and Jack Restauri each had an assist for Hespeler.

Michael Boyle-Ricupero scored in the first period for Woodstock while Davin Gray and Nolan Brett each had an assist for the Navy Vets.

Woodstock outshot Hespeler 34-33 while the Shamrocks went 1-for-8 on their power play and the Navy Vets went 1-for-5.

Lucas Hillert had 31 saves for Hespeler while Tyler Bouck had 31 for Woodstock.

The Shamrocks are to host the Tavistock Braves in their home opener Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena. Tavistock blanked the Paris Titans 6-0 in its season opener Friday at home.
