Hespeler Shamrocks handed setback by Wellesley

WELLESLEY – The Wellesley Applejacks scored single goals in each of the first two periods and rode them to a 5-3 victory over the Hespeler Shamrocks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Wednesday at the Wellesley Township Recreation Centre.

The rare midweek contest attracted 86 spectators. The Shamrocks had 17 players suited up for the game, three fewer than their hosts.

Michael Boyle-Ricupero, Alex Spencer and Jack Restauri had a goal apiece for Hespeler while Boden White had two assists and Boyle-Ricupero had one.

Single goals for Wellesley were recorded by Liam Wadel, Stuart Sinclair, Isiah Katsube, Kaelan McDougald and Connor Doerbecker while Eric Lacey and Katsube each had two assists. Wadel, Taylor Bothwell and Brennan Kennedy each had one.

Hespeler outshot Wellesley 36-26 and went 1-for-7 on its power play while Wellesley went 2-for-5.

David Hanley had 21 saves for the Shamrocks while Max Wright had 33 for the Applejacks.

The Shamrocks, sixth in the Doherty Division at 9-22-1-0, are to host the Norwich Merchants, fourth at 13-14-5-1, Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
