Hespeler Shamrocks net three in second to double Wellesley

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks scored three goals in the second period on their way to a 4-2 victory over the Wellesley Applejacks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The Shamrocks scored the only goal of the first period and were up 4-1 at the end of the second. They scored two goals eight seconds apart in the first minute of the second period.

Kaiden Gignac, Boden White, Justin George and Liam Nelson each had a goal for the Shamrocks. Jack Restauri assisted on two of the goals while Ryland MacPherson, Brandon Lamb, White, Michael Boyle-Ricupero and George each had one assist.

Connor Doerbecker and Carson Wickie scored power-play goals for Wellesley while assists went to Austin Stemmler, Owen O’Donnell and Logan Crans.

Hespeler outshot Wellesley 27-24 while the Applejacks went 2-for-6 on their power play and they held the Shamrocks scoreless on five power plays.

David Hanley had 22 saves for the Shamrocks while Mount Forest’s Owen Neomytka had 23 saves.

Woodstock Navy Vets lead the Doherty Division at 27-6-3-0 and are followed by the New Hamburg Firebirds at 27-7-2-0, Tavistock Braves at 21-11-1-2, Norwich Merchants at 14-16-5-1, Wellesley at 15-18-1-0, the Shamrocks at 10-23-2-0 and Paris Titans at 8-25-2-1.

Hespeler has seven games left in their regular season and can finish anywhere from fourth to seventh in the division.

They have a three-in-three this upcoming weekend as they’re to play the Applejacks in Wellesley Friday at 8:30 p.m., the Merchants at Norwich Saturday at 6 p.m. and host Woodstock Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
