Hespeler Shamrocks shut out by Woodstock

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks ran into a hot goaltender in Tyler Bouck of the Woodstock Navy Vets as they were blanked 5-0 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Sunday at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.

The loss was the third in Hespeler’s three-in-three weekend as they had been defeated 6-1 by the Wellesley Applejacks Friday at Wellesley and 4-2 by the Norwich Merchants Saturday at Norwich.

Sunday, Woodstock scored once in the first period and three times in the second, those three goals coming in a span of 4:43.

Aiden Kindurys, Davin Gray, Nolan Brett, Cole Dann and Guelph native Sam Barry had a goal apiece for Woodstock while Brady Carne had two assists and Brodie Kearns, Ethan Szabo, Dann, Owen Lukings and Michael Vermeersch each had an assist.

Bouck stopped 31 shots from the Shamrocks while his teammates took 46 shots on net during the game. The Navy Vets were scoreless on four power plays while Hespeler had two power plays.

Lucas Hillert started in net for Hespeler, but was replaced by David Hanley after Woodstock’s fourth goal. Hillert had 17 saves in his stint and Hanley had 24.

With four games to go in their regular season, the Shamrocks are guaranteed of finishing either sixth or seventh in the seven-team Doherty Division.

Woodstock’s in the race for first and could be Hespeler’s opponent in the divisional quarter-finals. So could the New Hamburg Firebirds or the Tavistock Braves. First-place finisher gets a bye in the opening round of the playoffs.

New Hamburg leads the division at 29-7-2-0 (W-L-OTL-T) and is a point ahead of Woodstock (28-7-3-0) while Tavistock (22-13-1-2) will finish third. Norwich (16-16-5-1) is fourth, three points up on Wellesley (17-19-1-0) and the Shamrocks (10-26-2-0) are sixth, three points ahead of the Paris Titans (8-26-2-1).

The Shamrocks are to play Norwich again at Norwich Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and host Tavistock Sunday at 3:30 p.m. They’re to close out their regular season with a pair of games against New Hamburg as they’re to play Feb. 23 at New Hamburg at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 25 at Hespeler at 3:30 p.m.
