It’s win-and-you’re-in for Gryphs after loss to Queen’s

GUELPH – The OUA football playoff hopes of the Guelph Gryphons rest solely in their control despite their loss to the Queen’s Gaels Saturday at Alumni Stadium.

The Gryphs are to travel to Ottawa to face the Carleton Ravens at Carleton’s TAAG Park in the final game of their regular season this coming Saturday.

Win that game and the Gryphs are in the playoffs.

The Gryphs never led in their Think Pink Game against Queen’s, but kept the Gaels close enough for a hopeful fourth-quarter comeback that just ran out of time.

The Gaels led 8-0 at the end of the first quarter, 15-7 at halftime and 17-9 at the end of the third quarter.

After Queen’s extended that lead to 24-9 with a touchdown by Anthony Soles on an eight-yard run and the following convert by Tyler Mullan, the Gryphs got that TD back exactly 10 minutes later on a broken play when quarterback Tristan Aboud connected with senior receiver Kaine Stevenson on an eight-yard TD toss and Ryan Ogilvie caught a pass for a two-point convert.

The Gryphs got the ball back twice after that score. The first time they got the ball to the Queen’s 37-yard-line before it stalled after Aboud was sacked.

The second time they started their drive at the Queen’s 46 after a 47-yard punt return by Anakin Guthrie. However, there was only eight seconds left in the final quarter. Aboud was sacked for a loss of six yards before Donavin Milloy was knocked out of bounds at the Queen’s 20 after game time expired following a 32-yard run, his 21st and longest carry of the game.

That final drive was Guelph’s 10th possession of three plays or fewer in the game. In all, they had 16 possessions.

Rookie quarterback Marshall McCray kept his streak of games in which he scored a TD alive with a four-yard run to the endzone early in the second quarter. It was his eighth TD of the season and the only one for the Gryphs other than Stevenson’s late TD.

Gabe Canabrava kicked a rouge on the kickoff following a failed two-point convert attempt after McCray’s TD.

The other points for the Gryphs came on a third-quarter safety.

Soles had two TDs for Queen’s as he also had one on a four-yard run late in the second quarter. Mullan converted both TDs and also kicked field goals of 15 and 35 yards. And the Gaels also had two safeties.

Aboud completed 16 of 23 pass attempts for 148 yards and a TD. He was intercepted twice and sacked five times.

Ogilvie and Willem Arseneau each caught three passes as a total of 10 Gryphons had receptions. Milloy and Stevenson had two apiece.

Milloy was the main weapon on the ground as his 21 carries netted 143 yards while McCray had five carries for 37 yards and Mason Duvall had four carries for 15 yards.

Devynn Cromwell had 8.5 tackles and a fumble recovery for the hosts while Braeden MacDougall had six tackles. Scott Murray had a solo sack and another one he shared with MacDougall.

The Queen’s attack was based around running back Jared Chisari who had 33 carries for 237 yards. Soles scored his two TDs on five carries for 23 yards.

Quarterback Russell Weir, who had four carries for 31 yards, completed eight of 16 pass attempts for 89 yards. Aidan O’Neal caught three of those passes for 22 yards.

Olivier Muembi and Silas Hubert each had 7.5 tackles for Queen’s while Hubert and Darien Newell each had two sacks. Joel Zarowny had the other one and Ashton Miller-Melancon had both interceptions. Keegan Vanek and DJ Ryan each had a fumble recovery.

Both teams had 21 first downs in the game while the Gaels had the edge in total yards, 315-294, thanks to Chisari’s running. Queen’s lost its only fumble and the Gryphs lost two of their three fumbles.

Heading into the final week of the regular season, six of the seven playoff participants have been decided as the Western Mustangs (7-0), Laurier Golden Hawks (7-0), Windsor Lancers (5-2), Queen’s (4-3), Ottawa Gee-Gees (4-3) and Carleton (3-4) have locked in post-season berths.

The other playoff berth will go to either the Gryphs (3-4) or Waterloo Warriors (2-5).

Carleton has secured its playoff berth as the Ravens would win a tiebreaker with Waterloo thanks to Saturday’s 31-30 win over the Warriors.

The Toronto Varsity Blues (2-5) can finish in a tie with either the Gryphs or Carleton, but would lose a tiebreaker as they’ve lost to both.

Toronto is to host Waterloo Saturday at Varsity Stadium in the only game other than the Gryphs-Carleton match that has implications as far as being in or out of the playoffs.

Big game in the league, though, is the one between Laurier and Western at Western Saturday. Winner gets first place and a bye in the quarter-finals while the loser will host the seventh-place finisher to open the playoffs.

All five of Saturday’s games in the league are to start at 1 p.m.
