Junior Gryphons U18s dropped by Brampton Bulldogs

GUELPH – The Guelph Junior Gryphons surrendered eight touchdowns as they were downed 52-17 by the Brampton Bulldogs in Ontario Summer Football League Under 18 play Saturday night at Alumni Stadium.

The Junior Gryphs actually led 7-6 after Matthew Stam caught a TD pass to the left and Evan Nicolasevic added the convert with 2:44 to go in the opening quarter.

Brampton had opened the scoring on a 64-yard TD run by Jean-Michael Walker, but the convert was blocked.

The Bulldogs shot ahead for good with 2.9 seconds to go in the first quarter on a one-yard TD plunge by Ethan Miller and Evan Looke caught a two-point convert pass as Brampton led 14-7 at the end of the quarter.

The Bulldogs added to their lead in the second quarter as Joshua-Cornelius Iseyemi caught a 13-yard TD toss and Isaiah Abdul picked up the ball on a blocked field goal attempt and returned it 80 yards for the score and then he added a two-point convert.

Apollos Eastman pulled in a 35-yard scoring strike for the Bulldogs on the last play of the opening half.

Brampton led 34-10 at halftime, Nicolasevic adding a field goal for Guelph’s second-quarter points.

Both teams scored a touchdown in the third quarter.

Walker stripping the ball on a fake punt and returning it 50 yards for a TD for the visitors midway through the quarter.

Aiden Van Esch hauled down a 35-yard TD pass on the final play of the third quarter for Guelph’s second TD of the game. Nicolasevic added the convert.

The Bulldogs scored a pair of unconverted TDs in the fourth quarter as Nicholas Park scored on a five-yard run midway through the quarter and Iseyemi added the other TD with 2:31 to go in the game.

The Junior Gryphs have a win and two losses in the AA West Division while Brampton has two wins and a loss.

The locals are to host the Chatham-Kent Cougars (1-2-0) Saturday at 7 p.m. at Alumni Stadium.
