Last-minute goal lifts Elora Hawks to win over Brampton
Levi Wilson scored with eight seconds to play to give the Elora Hawks an 8-7 victory over the Brampton Excelsiors Sunday night at the Jefferson Elora Community Centre.
Brampton had led 3-2 at the end of the first period while the teams were tied 4-4 after the second. Two consecutive goals gave Brampton a 7-6 lead with 2:39 to play before Levi Wilson scored two in a row, the first one coming with 1:50 to go.
Levi Wilson finished with three goals and three assists for the Hawks while single goals were added by Nolan Renaud, Sam Savary, Nolan Battler, Jeremiah Wade and Brinley Wilson. Tobias Wilson collected four assists while Devin Lampron had three and Brayden Mitchell, Brody Potanza, Wade and Brinley Wilson each had one.
Joaquin Gatt tallied twice for Brampton while Carson Robins, Caiden Merritt, Vincent Ward, Brodie Haynes and Jacob Janke each had one. Janke picked up three assists while Ward and Haynes had two apiece and Brian Freeman, Merritt and Callum Witter each had one.
The Hawks outshot the Excelsiors 53-52 and Brampton had a shorthanded goal.
Goaltenders Lucas Johnston of Elora and Anthony Cedilotte of Brampton each had 45 saves.
The win was the second in a row for the Hawks who started the season with three consecutive losses. They were edged 14-13 by the St. Catharines Athletics in their season and home opener May 16, lost 15-7 to the Athletics in Thorold May 20 and 13-11 to the Peterborough Lakers in Peterborough May 22 before getting by the Mimico Mountaineers 11-9 at Elora May 24.
The Hawks are to start a busy segment of five games in eight days Friday when they’re to play the Mountaineers at the Mimico Arena starting at 8 p.m. They’re also to host Toronto Beaches Saturday at 7 p.m. before playing road games against the Kitchener Kodiaks June 8, Burlington Blaze June 9 and Oakville Buzz June 11.
