Last-minute power-play goal gives Storm win over Flint

FLINT – A power-play goal by Charlie Paquette with four seconds to go in the game lifted the Guelph Storm to a 2-1 victory over the Flint Firebirds in OHL play Saturday night at Flint’s Dort Financial Center.

Paquette had scored the Storm’s opening goal midway through the second period.

Storm assists were awarded to Vilmer Alriksson, Zackary Sandhu, Jett Luchanko and Jake Karabela.

Gavin Hayes had opened the scoring for Flint just shy of the seven-minute mark of the first period. Zacharie Giroux set up the goal.

The winning goal was the lone one scored on five power plays for the Storm while Flint was 0-for-4 on its power play.

The Storm was held to single digits in shots in each period as they were outshot 27-20 by their hosts.

Damian Slavik had 26 saves for the Storm in his OHL debut. Nathan Day had 18 saves for the Firebirds.

The win leaves the Storm into a tie for fourth in the Western Conference with the Kitchener Rangers as both teams are at 4-2-0-0. London Knights lead the conference at 5-2-0-1 while the Soo Greyhounds are at 5-3-0-0 and Owen Sound Attack are at 4-2-1-0. The Storm and Rangers follow and trailing them are the Sarnia Sting (4-3-0-0), Saginaw Spirit (3-3-0-0), Erie Otters (2-3-1-0), Flint (1-5-0-0) and Windsor Spitfires (1-6-0-0).

The Storm are to host the Barrie Colts (4-2-0-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre.
