Late goal lifts Shamrocks to win in home opener

CAMBRIDGE – The Hespeler Shamrocks scored one goal in each of the second and third periods to come back for a 2-1 victory over the Tavistock Braves in their home opener in PJHL play at the Hespeler Memorial Arena Sunday.

Tavistock had scored the lone goal of the first period.

Christian Bergmann had an unassisted goal for Tavistock midway through the first period.

Riley Panagapka tied it for the Shamrocks seven and a half minutes into the second. Boden White and Justin George drew assists on the goal.

The score remained tied until Andrew Harris netted the winner for Hespeler with 62 seconds to go in regulation time. Assists went to Mathew Styka and Jack Restauri.

The Shamrocks outshot the Braves 37-34 and neither team took advantage of their numerous power plays, Hespeler having eight and Tavistock 11.

Lucas Hillert had 33 saves for Hespeler while Liam O’Leary had 35 for Tavistock.

The result leaves both teams at 1-1-0-0.

The Shamrocks have a pair of games on the weekend as they’re to play the Wellesley Applejacks (0-1-0-0) at the St. Clements Arena Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and host the Norwich Merchants (0-1-0-0) Sunday at 3:30 p.m. at the Hespeler Memorial Arena.
