Lions, Celtics move on to baseball semifinals

GUELPH – The semifinals are set in the District 10 high school baseball league following Thursday’s quarter-finals at the Joe Kaine Diamond.

St. James Lions and Bishop Macdonell Celtics both posted wins by six-run margins to advance to Tuesday’s semifinals, also at the Joe Kaine Diamond.

The Lions downed the Guelph CVI Green Gaels 10-4 in the opening game of the quarter-final doubleheader.

The Celtics defeated the Lourdes Crusaders 8-2 in the nightcap. Jackson Long was the winning pitcher.

Bishop Mac is to play the Centennial Spartans at 1 p.m. in the first game of the semifinal doubleheader.

St. James and Ross are to tangle in the second game at 3:30 p.m.

All playoff games are seven innings in duration unless stopped in the fifth inning or later by the 10-run mercy rule. There is no time limit on the length of the game, unlike the regular season where games are often halted by the two-hour time limit.

The top four teams in the regular-season standings have advanced to the semifinals as Centennial finished first at 4-1-0, Ross and St. James both finished at 3-1-1 with Ross winning the tie-breaker and Bishop Mac was fourth at 3-2-0. Lourdes was fifth at 1-4-0 and GCVI was sixth at 0-5-0.

Semifinal victors advance to the championship game scheduled for Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Joe Kaine Diamond.
