Losing streak for Guelph Royals reaches six games

BARRIE – The Guelph Royals suffered their sixth consecutive loss in Intercounty Baseball League play Thursday as they were downed 10-2 by the Barrie Baycats at Barrie’s Vintage Throne Stadium.

After the teams scored a run apiece in the first inning, Barrie went ahead for good with a run in the second and three more in the third.

The Baycats added four more runs in the fifth and one in the bottom of the sixth after the Royals had scored their other run in the top of the inning.

Tristan Pompey smacked a solo homer in the first inning for Guelph while singles by Ethan Hammond, J.D. Williams and Noah Roberts allowed Hammond to score Guelph’s second run.

Corey Morro had two singles in Guelph’s seven-hit attack while Pompey had his homer. Hammond, Williams, Tony Hrynkiw and Roberts each had one single.

The Baycats connected for 12 hits with Adam Odd clouting a homer, double and single to lead the way. Carson Burns hit a double and a single while Ryan Rijo and Josh Cote hit two singles apiece. Canice Ejoh hit a triple while Noel McGarry-Doyle and James Anderson each had a single.

Yomar Concepcion was tagged with the loss for the Royals. He yielded eight runs, all earned, off eight hits and three walks in four innings. He had a strikeout and threw 87 pitches.

Yuki Narita relieved for the other four innings and he surrendered two earned runs off four hits and three walks. He had seven strikeouts.

Juan Benitez had the win for Barrie as he kept the Royals to an earned run off three hits and a walk in five innings. He had three strikeouts.

Aidan Rossel (two innings), Chris Cox (one inning) and Brandon Hillier (one inning) saw time on the mound in relief for the hosts. Rossel gave up an earned run off three hits while Hillier yielded a hit and a walk. Rossel and Cox each had a strikeout.

The result leaves the Royals at 1-6 while Barrie improves to 3-3. The Royals and Brantford Red Sox, also 1-6, are the only teams in the league with losing records.

The Royals and Baycats are to meet again Saturday at Hastings Stadium. Game time is 1 p.m.
