Loss in extra time ends season for Gryphon soccer men

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons saw their OUA men’s soccer season come to an end Wednesday night at the Gryphon Soccer Complex when they yielded a goal almost eight minutes into extra time.

That goal gave the Western Mustangs a 2-1 victory in their West Division quarter-final.

The teams scored once apiece in the first half of regulation time before a scoreless second half.

Mahmoud Alqahwaji scored for Western in the 23rd minute with help from Owura Boateng.

Guelph’s Dante Ruddock evened the score just over 10 minutes later on a goal that saw an assist go to goalkeeper Carter Robart.

The Gryphs outshot the Mustangs 14-9 including an 8-6 advantage in shots on target and a 7-3 advantage in shots taken in the second half.

Guelph also took nine corner kicks in the match while Western took four.

The Gryphs were also called for 16 fouls, two more than Western.

Guelph had finished the regular season fourth in the OUA West standings at 7-4-1 while Western was fifth at 4-2-6.

The Gryphs and Western had also met twice during the regular season in the first two games of the campaign. Western won 2-1 at London Sept. 4 and the teams had fought to a scoreless tie six days later in Guelph.
