Magoffin marker gives Gryphon hockey women victory

TORONTO – A goal late in the second period stood up as the lone goal of the game as the Guelph Gryphons edged the fifth-ranked Toronto Varsity Blues 1-0 in OUA women’s hockey play Friday at Varsity Arena.

Jaime Magoffin scored with 61 seconds to go in the middle frame to give the Gryphs, ranked ninth in the country, the win. Katherine Heard assisted on the goal.

Martina Fedel had 16 saves for her second shutout in as many games.

Erica Fryer faced 13 shots in the Toronto net.

The win was the third in a row for the Gryphs and their fifth in their last six games.

The victory keeps the Gryphs second in the OUA West at 5-1-1-1 (W-OTW-OTL-L). Unranked Laurier Golden Hawks lead at 5-2-0-1 and the 10th-ranked Waterloo Warriors are third at 3-2-0-2.

Toronto is second in the OUA East at 3-1-0-3.

The Gryphs and Warriors are to tangle at Waterloo’s Columbia Icefields arena Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
