Mohawks fall to Athletics to open conference semifinal

FERGUS – The Elora Mohawks surrendered five goals in the third period as they dropped the opening game of their best-of-five Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League Western Conference semifinal 9-7 to the St. Catharines Athletics Thursday night at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The game was close throughout with neither gaining a lead of more than two goals. They were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and 4-4 after the second.

Affiliate player Riley Woods put Elora ahead in the second minute of the third period with his fourth goal of the game. However, the Athletics responded with three consecutive goals in a span of just over six minutes to grab a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.

Woods led the Mohawks with his four goals while Jabe Verbeek had two and Brinley Wilson added the other one. Owen Moore had four assists while Brinley Wilson had three, Tobias Wilson had two and Woods, Avery Cook, Verbeek and Connor Willmets had one apiece.

Colton Armitage had a hat trick for St. Catharines while Cody MacNeil scored twice and Ryan Andrews, Sutter Pilon, Jaden Patterson and Drew Kenney netted single goals. Patterson collected four assists while Jack Parker had two and Andrews, Armitage, Landon Jaeckle, Ian Kohut, Kenney and MacNeil each had one.

The Mohawks outshot St. Catharines 49-41, but were scoreless on three power plays while the Athletics went 1-for-2 on their power play.

Sam Forbes stopped 32 shots in the Elora net while Jarred JoeJoe Brant had 42 saves for St. Catharines.

The Mohawks had finished the regular season in second place in the conference at 17-3-0 while the Athletics were third at 14-5-1. The teams split their regular-season meetings, the Athletics winning 10-9 in St. Catharines May 26 and the Mohawks prevailing 11-8 in Fergus June 15.

Second game of the series is set for Friday at the Canada Games Sportsplex in St. Catharines. Game time is 8 p.m.

Game time is also 8 p.m. for Game 3. It’s slated for Tuesday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.
