Mohawks keep Wallaceburg down for Saturday win

FERGUS – The Elora Mohawks kept the Wallaceburg Red Devils without a goal in the final 34 minutes of the game as they ran to a 13-3 victory in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Saturday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

Wallaceburg led 2-1 midway through the first period, but the Mohawks surged ahead 3-2 by the end of the period and they led 9-3 after the second.

JJ Lavigne collected three goals and six assists for the Mohawks while Peyton Drone had three goals and three assists while Brinley Wilson had three goals and an assist. Owen Moore had two goals and an assist while Keegan Detweiler had a goal and four assists and Connor Willmets also had a goal. Owen Tovell gathered two assists while Carter Coffey, Tobias Wilson, Jabe Verbeek and goalkeeper Sam Forbes each had one assist.

Warren Everett, Landon Allaer and Kanton Verstraeten each had a goal for Wallaceburg while goalkeeper Mason Jacobs and Josh Snelgrove each had one assist.

The Mohawks outshot Wallaceburg 72-27, went 2-for-4 on their power play and held the Red Devils scoreless on six power plays.

Forbes had 24 saves for Elora while Jacobs had 59 for Wallaceburg.

Six Nations Rebels lead the West Division at 14-0-0 while the Mohawks are second at 14-2-0 with four games to play in their regular season.

The Mohawks are to host Six Nations Thursday at 8 p.m., play the Cambridge Highlanders (7-8-0) next Sunday (June 11) at the Galt Memorial Gardens, host St. Catharines Athletics (12-2-0) June 15 at 8 p.m. and complete their regular season with a game in Windsor against the Windsor Clippers (9-5-0) June 17 at 7 p.m.
