Mohawks pull away from Hamilton with second-half attack

FERGUS – The Elora Mohawks waited until the second half of their Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League game to leave the Hamilton Bengals behind.

The Mohawks led by a single goal midway through the game, but wound up dropping Hamilton 15-4 Thursday night at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

After getting both goals scored in the first period, the Mohawks exchanged goals with their guests through the first half of the second period to lead 4-3. However, the hosts then scored four consecutive goals to end the second with an 8-3 lead.

Brinley Wilson struck for five goals for Elora while Connor Willmets had a hat trick. Carter Coffey, Owen Moore and Keegan Detweiler each had a pair of goals while JJ Lavigne added a single marker. Moore had eight assists while Detweiler had five, Lavigne had four, Peyton Drone had three, Coffey had two and Brock Redwood, Wilson and Willmets had one apiece.

Scoring for Hamilton were Cooper Joyce, Liam Luzza, Andrew Hamilton and Hayden Hiltz while single assists went to Joyce, Josh Lucas, Ben Dietrich and Keegan Jackson.

The Mohawks outshot the Bengals 43-36 and went 3-for-6 on their power play. They also held Hamilton scoreless on five power plays.

Sam Forbes had 32 saves to get the win in net for the Mohawks while Jaxon Longboat had 25 saves for Hamilton until being replaced by Trystan Williams for the final 9:31 of the game. Williams stopped the three shots he faced.

Elora is second in the Western Conference at 10-1-0, trailing only the Six Nations Rebels (12-0-0). The Mohawks are followed by the Guelph Regals (8-3-0), St. Catharines Athletics (7-2-0), Windsor Clippers (7-3-0), Hamilton (6-5-0), Owen Sound North Stars (5-5-0), Cambridge Highlanders (5-6-0), Wallaceburg Red Devils (2-7-0), London Blue Devils (1-10-0), Welland Generals (0-10-0) and Point Edward Pacers (0-11-0).

The game was the third consecutive home game for the Mohawks who are now slated to play four consecutive road games as they’re to be in St. Catharines Friday at 9 p.m., London Sunday at 4 p.m., Guelph at Victoria Road arena Wednesday at 8 p.m. and Owen Sound next Thursday at 8 p.m.
