Mohawks run away from Clippers in third period for win

FERGUS – The Elora Mohawks struck for the final six goals of the game as they handed the Windsor Clippers a 9-4 setback in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Sunday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Clippers led 4-3 with five minutes to go in the second period, but never scored after that.

The teams had traded goals in the first period and were tied 3-3 at the end of the frame. A pair of power-play goals late in the second gave Elora a 5-4 lead at the end of the period.

Brinley Wilson had four goals and two assists for the Mohawks while Jabe Verbeek netted two goals and had three assists. Carter Coffey, Peyton Drone and Keegan Detweiler also scored a goal apiece while JJ Lavigne had three assists. Coffey, Owen Moore and Detweiler each had two assists and Brock Redwood had one.

Callum Brennan had a pair of goals for Windsor while Quinn Brennan and Connor McManus added a goal apiece. Quinn Brennan and Niko Spewok each had two assists while single assists went to Nate Dowling and McManus.

The Mohawks outshot Windsor 40-25 and went 4-for-6 on their power play while the Clippers were scoreless on four power plays.

Sam Forbes had 21 saves in the Elora net while MJ Schwager had 31 saves for Windsor.

Six Nations Rebels lead the Western Conference at 11-0-0 while the Mohawks are second at 9-2-0. They’re followed by the St. Catharines Athletics at 7-2-0, Guelph Regals at 7-3-0, Windsor at 6-3-0, Hamilton Bengals at 6-4-0, Cambridge Highlanders at 5-5-0, Owen Sound North Stars at 4-5-0, Wallaceburg Red Devils at 2-7-0, London Blue Devils at 1-8-0 and Point Edward Pacers and Welland Generals each at 0-10-0.

The Mohawks are to host Hamilton Thursday at 8 p.m. at Fergus.
