Mohawks secure win over Regals with five consecutive goals

GUELPH – A five-goal run by the Elora Mohawks that started late in the second period and ended midway through the third proved to be the difference in the game as the Mohawks handed the Guelph Regals a 12-7 setback in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Wednesday at the Victoria Road arena.

The Mohawks never trailed in the match, but a trio of goals by the Regals in a span of 4:10 late in the third period gave the hosts thoughts of pulling even. However, a last-minute goal by Elora completed the scoring.

The Mohawks led 3-0 at the end of the first period and 8-4 after the second.

Brinley Wilson had three goals and two assists for the Mohawks while JJ Lavigne had two goals and three assists and Brock Redwood and Connor Willmets each had two goals and an assist. Jabe Verbeek added a goal and three assists while Owen Moore had a goal and two assists and Keegan Detweiler collected a goal and an assist. Tobias Wilson assisted on two goals and Owen Tovell and Carter Coffey each had one assist.

Marcus Keleher had a hat trick for the Regals while Kyle Beecraft and Dylan Davey each had a goal and two assists, Owen Orpana had a goal and an assist and Ethan Keleher also netted a goal. Charlie Boon collected three assists.

The Mohawks outshot the Regals 56-39 and went 4-for-8 on their power play while the Regals were scoreless on their lone power play. The Regals were assessed 18 minutes in penalties while the Mohawks were whistled for four.

Sam Forbes had 32 saves for Elora while Anthony Fonte had 44 for the hosts.

Six Nations Rebels lead the Western Conference at 13-0-0 and they’re the lone team in the conference to have clinched a playoff berth. The Mohawks are second at 12-2-0 and they’re followed by the St. Catharines Athletics at 10-2-0, the Regals at 10-4-0, Hamilton Bengals at 9-5-0, Windsor Clippers at 8-4-0, Owen Sound North Stars at 5-6-0, Cambridge Highlanders at 5-8-0, Wallaceburg Red Devils at 3-8-0, London Blue Devils at 1-11-0 and the Welland Generals and Point Edward Pacers both at 0-13-0.

Top eight qualify for the playoffs.

The Mohawks are to play the North Stars at Owen Sound’s Bayshore arena Thursday at 8 p.m. and host Wallaceburg at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Regals are to play the Athletics at the Canada Games Sportsplex in St. Catharines Saturday at 5 p.m. and host Owen Sound Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena.
