Mohawks shoot ahead in first period in win over Cambridge

FERGUS – A pair of goals by Keegan Detweiler 57 seconds apart midway through the first period gave the Elora Mohawks a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in an 8-4 victory over the Cambridge Highlanders in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Thursday at the Centre Wellington District Sportsplex.

Detweiler’s goals helped the Mohawks grab a 4-2 lead by the end of the opening period while the teams scored twice apiece in the second.

Carter Coffey also scored twice for the Mohawks while JJ Lavigne, Peyton Drone, Brinley Wilson and Connor Willmets added single goals. Owen Moore assisted on four of the goals while Lavigne, Jabe Verbeek and Wilson each had two assists. Single assists were awarded to Coffey, Drone, Brock Redwood, Owen Williams and Detweiler.

Tyler Francis-Renner had a hat trick for Cambridge while Drake Neal scored the other goal. Cole Hunsberger and Ashton Lankowski each had two assists while Trey Weinstein and Eric Poirier each had one.

Elora outshot Cambridge 40-35 and each team had seven power plays, the Mohawks scoring two power-play goals and the Highlanders scoring one.

Sam Forbes had 31 saves in the Elora net while Josh Swift had 32 for Cambridge.

The win was the seventh in a row for the Mohawks and it leaves them at 8-1-0, good for second in the Western Conference. Six Nations Rebels lead at 10-0-0 while the Guelph Regals and Hamilton Bengals are tied for third at 6-3-0. They’re followed by the St. Catharines Athletics (5-1-0), Windsor Clippers (5-2-0), Cambridge (4-5-0), Owen Sound Northstars (2-5-0), London Blue Devils (1-6-0), Wallaceburg Red Devils (1-6-0), Point Edward Pacers (0-8-0) and Welland Generals (0-8-0).

The game was also the first of three consecutive home games for the Mohawks as they’re to host Windsor Sunday at 3 p.m. and Hamilton next Thursday at 8 p.m.
