Mohawks staring at ousting after another 2-goal setback

ST. CATHARINES – The Elora Mohawks find themselves on the brink of elimination after dropping an 11-9 contest in overtime to the St. Catharines Athletics in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League playoff action Friday night at the Canada Games arena.

The win gives St. Catharines a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five Western Conference semifinal.

St. Catharines won the series opener 9-7 in Fergus Thursday.

The Mohawks scored the first two goals of Friday’s game and held a two-goal lead with four minutes to go in regulation time before the hosts tallied twice to force an extra 10-minute period.

The score was still tied, although both teams had scored once earlier in the extra frame, with three minutes to go before Ari Stenhuis netted a pair of goals to give St. Catharines the victory.

The teams were tied 2-2 at the end of the first period and St. Catharines led 5-4 after the second. They were tied again 8-8 at the end of regulation time.

Owen Moore and Keegan Detweiler each had two goals and two assists for Elora while Riley Woods had a goal and three assists. Carter Coffey, Brinley Wilson, Trae Verbeek and Connor Willmets added single goals while Wilson had four assists and Woods had three. Coffey and Nate Renaud each had one assist.

Stenhuis’s goals in OT were his goals for the game while Ryan Andrews, Jack Parker, Trent Mooradian, Jaden Patterson, Levi Roest, Colton Armitage, Ian Kohut, Drew Kenney and Cody MacNeil each scored once. Patterson and Kenney each had three assists while Parker, Landon Jaeckle and Kohut each had two and Andrews, Stenhuis, Owen Faris and MacNeil each had one.

The Mohawks outshot St. Catharines 53-49. Sam Forbes had 38 saves for Elora while Jarred JoeJoe Brant had 44 for the Athletics.

Elora’s Ryan McDougall was assessed the lone penalty of the game, a minor for slashing early in the first period. St. Catharines didn’t score on the resulting power play.

Game 3 is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.
