Mount Forest downed as Walkerton special in third period

WALKERTON – The Mount Forest Patriots surrendered four special teams goals in the third period to the Walkerton Capitals as they were handed a 7-5 setback in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Walkerton Community Centre.

The teams had been tied 3-3 after the second period and that score remained until the host Capitals scored a pair of power-play goals just under three minutes apart midway through the third to go ahead for good.

In the third period, the Capitals scored three power-play goals and a shorthanded goal into an empty net with 69 seconds to play.

While the teams had been tied at the end of the second period, they’d also been tied 1-1 at the end of the first.

Matt McLellan had a four-goal outing for the Patriots while Keegan Detweiler scored the other goal. Brody Leblanc collected three assists while Aaron McGuirk, Cameron Voisin, Aidan Doig, Charlie Mckenzie and Jaxon Gawel each had one.

Adam MacRobbie and Chase Lorenz tallied twice apiece for Walkerton while single goals were added by Nathan Doran, Nate Binkley and Sam Shakes. Doran picked up three assists while Lorenz had two and MacRobbie and Owen Troyer had one apiece.

Walkerton outshot the Patriots 45-36 and went 5-for-14 on their power play while Mount Forest was scoreless on seven power plays.

Michael Purkhart had 38 saves in the Mount Forest net while Vance Meyer had 31 for Walkerton.

Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 3-0-0-0 and are followed by Walkerton, Fergus Whalers and Wingham Ironmen each at 2-1-0-0, Kincardine Bulldogs at 1-0-1-0, the Patriots at 0-1-1-0 and the Mitchell Hawks and Goderich Flyers each at 0-2-0-0.

The Patriots are to host Hanover Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
