Mount Forest Patriots clip Wingham Ironmen in overtime

WINGHAM – Jaxon Gawel’s unassisted goal at 3:42 of overtime lifted the Mount Forest Patriots to a 2-1 victory over the Wingham Ironmen in PJHL play Friday night at Wingham’s North Wescast Community Centre.

The win was the third in a row for the Patriots.

The other two goals in the game came in a span of about three and a half minutes late in the second period.

Austin Becker opened the scoring for the hosts with help from Ethan Smith and Josh Pham.

Will Lewis pulled the Patriots even with a goal assisted by Brody Leblanc and Owen Tovell.

The Patriots outshot the Ironmen 29-27 due to firing all five shots taken in the overtime. Mount Forest was scoreless on four power plays while Wingham was scoreless on six power plays.

Michael Purkhart had 26 saves for the Patriots while Garrett Golley had 27 for Wingham.

Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 6-0-0-1 and are followed by the Walkerton Capitals (6-1-0-0), Kincardine Bulldogs (3-2-1-1), the Patriots (3-2-1-0), Wingham (3-3-1-0), Fergus Whalers (2-2-1-2), Mitchell Hawks (2-4-1-0) and Goderich Flyers (0-6-0-0).

The Patriots are to play the Hawks at the Mitchell arena Saturday at 7:15 p.m.
