Mount Forest Patriots edged by Wingham in Game 2

WINGHAM – The Mount Forest Patriots dug themselves too deep a hole from which to recover as they dropped a 6-5 decision to the Wingham Ironmen in the second game of the PJHL Pollock Division semifinal Friday night at Wingham’s North Huron Wescast Community Centre.

Penalties also proved costly for the Patriots as they yielded five power-play goals. However, Mount Forest did score three times on its power play.

The result leaves best-of-seven series tied 1-1.

Wingham scored five consecutive goals in just over 10 minutes of game time to take early control of the game. But Mount Forest battled back and finally cut the gap to a single goal with 3:19 to play, but they couldn’t net the equalizer.

While the Patriots scored in the opening minute of the match, Wingham led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 5-1 a second after the three-minute mark of the second period. That lead stood at 6-3 at the end of the second period.

Brody Leblanc and Dylan Szymanowski each scored twice for Mount Forest while Matthew Weiler netted the other goal. Dylan Szymanowski also had two assists while single assists were awarded to Austin Griffin, Elijah Brahaney, Leblanc and Charlie Mckenzie.

Kyle Stanbury tallied twice for Wingham while Nigel Kreager, Matt Tolton, Dawson Fahrer and Austin Becker added single goals. Nate Bloemberg, Stanbury and Fahrer had two assists apiece while Turner Mckenzie, Tolton, Tayt Bramhill and Coleson Fischer had single assists.

The Patriots outshot the Ironmen 26-22. Mount Forest had five power plays and Wingham had 10.

Vance Meyer started in net for the Patriots but was relieved by Tristan Szymanowski after Wingham’s fifth goal at 3:01 of the second period. Meyer had five saves while Szymanowski had 11 the rest of the way.

Garrett Golley had 21 saves for Wingham.

Third game of the series is set for Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

Game 4 is to go Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at Wingham while Game 5 is scheduled for next Friday at 8 p.m. at Mount Forest.
