Mount Forest Patriots nipped by Hanover in overtime

HANOVER – The Mount Forest Patriots yielded a goal in overtime to spoil a comeback as the Patriots were edged 6-5 by the Hanover Barons in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday at the P and H Centre.

The overtime goal came after the Patriots scored the final three goals of regulation time to force the game into extra time.

The game was a streaky one in terms of scoring as the Patriots hit for the first two goals of the game before the Barons scored five in a row to set the stage for Mount Forest’s three straight that sent the game into overtime.

Keegan Detweiler, Devan Doig, Connor Paige, Seth Huygen and Jordan Leitch each had a goal for Mount Forest Patriots while Jared Rowe had two assists. Picking up one assist apiece were Reid Caswell, Owen Tovell, Conner Willmets, Doig, Leitch and Huygen.

Scoring for Hanover were Austin Farlow, Ryan Colquhoun, Dylan Becker, Spencer Davidson, Will Ross and Ryan Goetz. Jacob Duggan assisted on three of the goals while Ross had two assists while Joey Stimac, Goetz, Aaron Dukeshire, Colquhoun and Eliott McCarey each had one.

The Patriots outshot the Barons 39-38, but didn’t have a power play in the game. Hanover had three, but didn’t score.

Michael Purkhart had 32 saves in the game for the Patriots while Nolan Brown had 34 for the Barons.

Hanover is first in the Pollock Division at 36-4-0-2 (W-L-OTL-T) while the Patriots are second at 31-7-3-0 and they will finish the regular season in that order.

The Patriots are to complete their regular season with a game Saturday at 8 p.m. against the Goderich Flyers (3-34-2-2) at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Complex. Goderich will finish eighth in the division.

Mount Forest is to play the seventh-place Mitchell Hawks (11-25-3-2) in the best-of-seven quarter-finals. That series is to start Wednesday at 8:15 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
