Mount Forest Patriots rally to ground Goderich Flyers

GODERICH – The Mount Forest Patriots scored three times in the third period to post a 5-2 victory over the Goderich Flyers in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Centre.

Goderich led 2-1 at the end of the first period before Mount Forest scored the lone goal of the second period.

Jack Micone had a pair of goals for the Patriots while Matthew Weiler, Brody Leblanc and Matt McLellan each had a single goal. Owen Tovell and Seth Huygen collected two assists apiece while Aidan Doig, Leblanc, Jaxon Gawel and Joseph Weiler each had one assist.

Leland Weber and James Bender had the goals for Goderich while Jared Houghton, Jayce MacArthur, Cooper Gaul and Kyle Smeltzer each had an assist.

The Patriots outshot the Flyers 35-29 and both teams were 0-for-3 on their power plays.

Marshall Nicholls had 27 saves for Mount Forest while Christian Dejong had 30 for Goderich.

The Pollock Division finished its regular season Saturday. Hanover Barons finished first at 36-4-0-2 (W-L-OTL-T) with Mount Forest (32-7-3-0) second, Kincardine Bulldogs (23-12-2-5) third, Fergus Whalers (20-17-3-2) fourth, Walkerton Capitals (18-20-2-2) fifth, Wingham Ironmen (17-21-3-1) sixth, Mitchell Hawks (11-26-3-2) seventh and Goderich (3-35-2-2) eighth.

The Patriots and Mitchell are to meet in a best-of-seven division quarter-final that is to start Wednesday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

Mount Forest and Mitchell met six times in the regular season with the Patriots winning all six. They won 2-1 in overtime at Mitchell Oct. 7, 7-2 at Mitchell Nov. 5, 6-0 at Mount Forest Dec. 9, 6-2 at Mitchell Dec. 16, 8-4 at Mount Forest Jan. 27 and 4-2 at Mount Forest Feb. 17.

Game time for Wednesday’s series opener is 8:15 p.m.
