Mount Forest Patriots slip by Little Britain in preseason play

ALLISTON – The Mount Forest Patriots picked up their first win of the PJHL preseason Friday night as they edged the Little Britain Merchants 2-1 in the Alliston Hornets annual preseason tournament at the New Tecumseth Recreation Centre.

All the scoring in the game was limited to the second period.

The Patriots scored their two goals just less than eight and a half minutes apart while Little Britain tallied with less than two minutes to go in the second.

Cameron Lytle and Brody Leblanc scored for Mount Forest while Leblanc, Charlie Mckenzie and Jordan Leitch each had an assist.

Ryan Brown had the lone goal for short-staffed Little Britain while Everitt Corneil assisted on the goal. The Merchants had 16 players suited up for the game including two goalkeepers. The Patriots had 20 in their lineup.

Little Britain outshot the Patriots 36-25 after holding Mount Forest to three shots in the first period. The Patriots went 1-for-5 on their power play while Little Britain was scoreless on two power plays.

Returnee Tristan Szymanowski had 35 saves for the Patriots while Joseph Clark, who played nine games with the Woodstock Navy Vets last season, had 23 saves for Little Britain.

While the Patriots are members of the league’s Pollock Division of the North Conference, the Merchants play in the Orr Division of the East Conference. Mount Forest was 32-9-0-1 in the regular season last winter while Little Britain was 23-12-6-1.

The Patriots had opened their preseason with a 7-3 loss to the New Hamburg Firebirds at the Wilmot Recreation Complex Aug. 31.

Keegan Detweiler, Matt McLellan and Leblanc scored the goals in that game while Hartley Mckenzie and Conner Willmets each had an assist.

The Patriots were outshot 52-25. Nolan Brown had 26 saves in his half of the game while Nathan MacMillan had 19 in his half.

Mount Forest is to complete its preseason with a pair of games today (Sept. 9) at Alliston as the Patriots are to play the Stayner Siskins at 12:30 p.m. and the Huntsville Otters at 5:30 p.m.

The Patriots are to host the expansion Fergus Whalers in their regular-season opener Sept. 16 at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex. Game time is 8 p.m. That is also to be the season opener for the Whalers.
