Mount Forest rallies in third period to get by Fergus

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots fired home three goals in the third period to hand the Fergus Whalers a 3-1 setback in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Friday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

Jett Morningstar gave the Whalers the early lead with the lone goal of the first period. Conner Bradley and Riley Broderick assisted on the goal.

Fergus kept the lead until the Patriots scored a pair of goals 22 seconds apart in the first minute and a half of the third period.

Matthew Weiler scored for Mount Forest 46 seconds into the third and Matt McLellan netted the second goal at 1:08. Connor Paige had the other goal for the Patriots at 7:03 of the third. Conner Willmets, Aidan Doig, Brody Leblanc, Charlie Mckenzie and Jared Rowe each had an assist.

The Whalers outshot the Patriots 33-28 thanks to a 19-11 advantage in the third period. Neither team managed a power play goal although Fergus had seven power plays and Mount Forest had six.

Marshall Nicholls had 32 saves for Mount Forest and Bradley Boville had 25 for Fergus.

Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 12-0-0-2 while Kincardine Bulldogs are second at 10-3-1-3 and the Patriots are third at 11-4-1-0. They’re followed by Walkerton Capitals at 9-5-1-0, Wingham Ironmen at 7-9-1-0, Mitchell Hawks at 5-9-2-0, the Whalers at 3-9-2-2 and Goderich Flyers at 2-12-0-1.

The Patriots are to play the Flyers at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Centre Saturday at 8 p.m. while the Whalers are to host Hanover at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex Sunday at 3 p.m.
