Narita, Guelph Royals hold Kitchener in check

GUELPH – Yuki Narita and a pair of relievers held the Kitchener Panthers to three hits in Narita’s first start with the Guelph Royals as they put an end to a seven-game Intercounty Baseball League losing streak with a 5-3 victory Tuesday night at Hastings Stadium.

The game was a makeup match for their postponed original home opener May 20.

The Royals grabbed a 2-1 lead in the second inning and added their other three runs in the fourth while Kitchener completed the scoring with two runs in the seventh.

J.D. Williams hit a solo homer for Guelph in the second before Justin Interisano, Mike Cecchetto and Darius Barlas each hit singles with Interisano scoring on a balk.

In the fourth, Cecchetto, Barlas and Brando Leroux hit singles to score Cecchetto while Barlas scored on a sacrifice fly by Ethan Hammond and Leroux scored on an error.

Interisano finished the game with a double and a single while Hammond, Cecchetto and Barlas each had two singles and Williams hit his homer. Getting one single each were Leroux, Conner Morro, Noah Roberts and Corey Morro.

Getting the hits for Kitchener, all singles, with one apiece were Blake Jacklin, Yunior Ibarra and Jett Jarvis.

Narita went six innings and yielded an earned run off one hit and four walks. He had eight strikeouts.

Yomar Concepcion gave up the other two runs, one earned, off two hits in two innings. He didn’t walk anyone and fanned one.

Brandon Deans collected the save by striking out all three batters he faced in the ninth.

The Royals touched Kitchener starter Yamichel Perez for their five runs, four earned, off 10 hits and a walk in 4 2/3 innings. He had four strikeouts.

Nathan Laird (1 1/3 innings), former Royal Daniel Marquez (1 inning) and Brady Schnarr (1 inning) each had time on the mound. Laird yielded two hits and a walk while Marquez gave up a hit and a walk and Schnarr also walked one. Getting one strikeout apiece were Marquez and Schnarr.

The result leaves the Royals at 2-7 and Kitchener at 6-3.
