NORTH BAY – The Guelph Gryphons yielded the final three goals of the game as they were handed a 4-1 setback by the Nipissing Lakers in OUA men’s hockey play Wednesday at North Bay’s Memorial Gardens.

Nipissing scored the lone goal of the first period and led 2-1 after the second.

Jacob Winterton’s power-play goal at 8:24 of the second pulled the Gryphs even with the Lakers.

Jaxon Camp and Duncan Penman drew assists on the goal.

However, Nipissing responded with three consecutive goals, one in the second period and two a little over two and a half minutes apart halfway through the third.

Charlie Johnson had two goals for the Lakers while Kyle Foreman and Cole Stewart scored the other goals. Payton Vescio assisted on two of the goals while single assists went to Devyn Mayea, Charles Farmer, Foreman, Harrison Caines and Chase Lacombe each had one assist.

Nipissing outshot the Gryphs 31-19, but were scoreless on three power plays while Guelph went 1-for-4 with a manpower advantage.

Tanner Wickware had 27 saves for the Gryphs while Reece Proulx had 18 for Nipissing.

The game was the fourth consecutive road game for the Gryphs. They’re to finish the 2023 portion of their schedule with two more road games this weekend as they’re to tangle with the Carleton Ravens in Ottawa Friday night and the Ottawa Gee-Gees there Saturday afternoon.
