
Orangeville Bears capture CWOSSA AAA hoops crown
GUELPH – District 10 champion Orangeville Bears captured their first CWOSSA high school AAA girls’ basketball championship Saturday with a 49-47 victory over the Assumption Lions of Brantford in the final at Centennial CVI.
It was a replay of the very first game of this year’s tournament that saw Assumption prevail 66-63 in overtime.
Orangeville defeated Kitchener-Waterloo CWS (KCI) 74-58 in one semifinal while Assumption downed Waterloo CI 47-25 in the other.
The Bears advance to next week’s 16-team provincial OFSAA AAA championship tournament at Hamilton. The three-day tournament is to start Thursday and wrap up Saturday.
Junior
The St. John’s Green Eagles of Brantford won the junior final 52-39 over the Ross Royals.
St. John’s downed the Laurel Heights Highlanders of Waterloo 65-12 in the semifinals while the D10 champion Royals edged the St. Benedict Saints of Cambridge 44-40 in the other semifinal.
The championship win was the 16th overall for St. John’s and their fifth in eighth season.
Ross won it once, in 1985.
