Orangeville Bears post surprise in girls’ hockey

ORANGEVILLE – The Orangeville Bears surprised the Ross Royals with a 6-4 victory in District 10 high school girls’ hockey play Wednesday at the Tony Rose arena.

The result finalized the final positions in the five-team league standings for all the teams as it erased any chance Ross had over overtaking the Centre Wellington Falcons for first place.

Eden Gowing scored four times for Orangeville while single goals were added by Emma Stamper and Mackenzie Mills.

Josie Meredith tallied twice for Ross while the identity of the other scorers was unavailable.

Centre Wellington leads the league at 7-0-0-0 (W-L-T-OL) while Ross is second at 5-2-0-0, Centennial Spartans third at 4-4-0-0, Orangeville fourth at 3-5-0-0 and St. James Lions fifth at 0-8-0-0.

The Falcons and Royals are to meet in the final game of the regular season Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex in Fergus in a game that has no bearing on the final rankings.

The playoffs are to begin Wednesday at 2 p.m. in Orangeville with the Bears hosting St. James in the lone quarter-final match. Winner advances to play Centre Wellington in Fergus in the semifinals Feb. 21 at 2 p.m. Centennial and Ross are to clash in another semifinal match that day.

The championship match is to be played Feb. 28 at a site to be determined.
