Patriots blank Goderich for first win of season

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots picked up their first win of the Provincial Junior Hockey League season as they clobbered the Goderich Flyers 7-0 Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The Patriots scored four times in the first period to put an end to their season-opening three-game winless streak.

The hosts also scored once in the second period and twice in the third.

Brody Leblanc had a six-point game for the Patriots with four goals and two assists while Conner Willmets, Jaxon Gawel and Keegan Detweiler collected single goals. Charlie Mckenzie had three assists while Matt McLellan had two assists while Aaron McGuirk, Will Lewis, Owen Tovell and Gawel each had one assist.

Leblanc had the eventual game-winning goal 23 seconds into the game and he had a natural hat trick – three consecutive goals – later in the game.

The Patriots outshot the Flyers 37-20 and went 1-for-4 on their power play while Goderich was scoreless on five power plays.

Michael Purkhart had 20 saves to get the shutout for Mount Forest while Christian DeJong had 30 saves for Goderich.

Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 5-0-0-1 while the Walkerton Capitals are second at 4-1-0-0. They’re followed by the Kincardine Bulldogs (2-1-1-1), Fergus Whalers (2-1-0-2), Wingham Ironmen (3-3-0-0), Mitchell Hawks (2-3-1-0), Mount Forest (1-2-1-0) and Goderich (0-5-0-0).

The Patriots are to host Kincardine Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.
