Patriots clip Walkerton for fifth consecutive win

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots claimed their fifth consecutive win when they slipped by the Walkerton Capitals 3-2 in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday night at the Mount Forest and District sports Complex.

A goal by Will Lewis of the Patriots with 7:30 to go in the second period proved to be both the winning goal and the final goal of the game.

The Patriots led 2-1 at the end of the first period before the teams scored once apiece in the second.

Reid Caswell and Brody Leblanc scored in the first period for the Patriots while Jaxon Gawel collected a pair of assists and Austin Griffin, Jared Rowe and Matt McLellan each had one assist.

Graham Gateman and Nate Binkley tallied for Walkerton while assists went to Ethan Kerr and Nate Oniszeczko.

The Patriots outshot the Capitals 27-24 and neither team netted a power-play goal, Walkerton on three power plays and Mount Forest on one.

Nolan Brown had 22 saves in net for Mount Forest while Vance Meyer had 24 for Walkerton.

The result leaves Mount Forest at 5-2-1-0 and Walkerton at 6-3-1-0.

The Patriots are to play the Fergus Whalers (2-3-2-2) at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex Sunday at 3 p.m.
