Patriots jump ahead in first and stay ahead to edge Whalers

FERGUS – A pair of goals in the final two and a half minutes of the first period gave the Mount Forest Patriots a lead they wouldn’t relinquish in their Provincial Junior Hockey League game with the Fergus Whalers Sunday at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

The Patriots and Whalers traded goals the remainder of the way, leaving the Patriots with a 5-4 win and a six-game unbeaten streak.

The Patriots led 2-0 at the end of the opening period and 3-2 after the second.

Will Lewis had a goal and two assists for Mount Forest while Matt McLellan had a goal and an assist. Aaron McGuirk, Reid Caswell and Jaxon Gawel also scored while Devan Doig, Jack Kruiderink and Cameron Lytle each had an assist.

Ty Anselmini and Nolan Burnside each scored twice for the Whalers while Kyle Parsons assisted on three of the goals. Single assists went to JJ Lavigne and Campbell Hobson.

The Patriots outshot the Whalers 36-22 and both teams had four power plays with Mount Forest getting the lone power-play goal of the game.

Bradley Boville had 31 saves for Fergus while Michael Purkhart had 18 for Mount Forest.

The Hanover Barons lead the Pollock Division at 9-0-0-1 and are followed by the Kincardine Bulldogs (6-2-1-1), the Patriots (6-2-1-0), Walkerton Capitals (6-3-1-0), Wingham Ironmen (5-4-1-0), the Whalers (2-4-2-2), Mitchell Hawks (2-6-2-0) and Goderich Flyers (1-8-0-0).

The Patriots are to host Wingham Friday at 8:30 p.m. at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex at 8:30 p.m. and play Goderich at the Goderich Maitland Recreation Centre Saturday at 8 p.m.

The Whalers are to play the Hawks at the Mitchell Arena Saturday at 7:15 p.m. and host Kincardine Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.
