Patriots net three in third to stay unbeaten in playoffs

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots remained undefeated in the Provincial Junior Hockey League playoffs as they recorded a 5-2 victory over the Kincardine Bulldogs Saturday at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

The win gives Mount Forest a 3-0 lead in the best-of seven Pollock Division semifinal. The Patriots had swept a playoff-opening quarter-final series with the Mitchell Hawks in four games.

Saturday, the Patriots scored three times in the third for the win. The teams had been tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before Mount Forest scored the lone goal of the second.

Matt McLellan had a pair of goals for the Patriots while Jordan Leitch, Jared Rowe and Charlie Mckenzie scored once apiece. Jack Micone and Austin Griffin each had three assists while single assists were awarded to Seth Huygen, Owen Tovell and Aaron McGuirk.

Gavin Gibbons and Jordan Beisel scored for Kincardine while assists went to Chad Lawrence, Gavin Downs and Liam Colhoun.

Statistical rarity as the teams took 12 shots apiece in each period.

The Patriots went 2-for-5 on their power play while Kincardine was scoreless on five power plays.

Marshall Nicholls had 34 saves for Mount Forest and Carter Garvie had 31 for the Bulldogs.

Fourth game of the series is slated for Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. at Kincardine’s Davidson Centre.

Winner of the series is to meet the winner of the other semifinal between the Fergus Whalers and Hanover Barons in the division final. That best-of-seven semifinal is tied 1-1 with Game 3 to go Sunday at 3:30 p.m. in Fergus.
