Patriots’ winning streak halted in OT by Kincardine

MOUNT FOREST – The Mount Forest Patriots saw their 17-game winning streak come to an end Sunday when they were edged 6-5 in overtime by the Kincardine Bulldogs at the Mount Forest and District Sports Complex.

Gavin Downs scored the winner for Kincardine at 6:26 of overtime, the goal putting the Bulldogs ahead for the first time in the game. It capped a comeback that saw Kincardine rally from a three-goal deficit early in the second period.

Mount Forest led 2-0 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second. They were tied 5-5 at the end of regulation time.

The winning goal completed a hat trick for Downs. Tyler Wagler, Chad Lawrence and Carter Servais added single goals while Gavin Gibbons had three assists and Bryce Martin had two assists. Wagler, Austin Waite, Nolan MacKinnon, Kieran Moore and Trent Houghton each had one assist.

Brody Leblanc had a pair of goals for the Patriots while single markers were netted by Matt McLellan, Charlie Mckenzie and Jaxon Gawel. Gawel also had two assists while McLellan, Austin Griffin and Mckenzie each had one assist.

Kincardine outshot Mount Forest 45-37 including an 8-2 advantage in overtime. The Patriots went 2-for-3 on their power play and they held the Bulldogs scoreless on four power plays.

Marshall Nicholls had 39 saves for Mount Forest while Carter Garvie had 32 saves for Kincardine.

Mount Forest and Hanover Barons are tied for the Pollock Division lead, the Patriots having a record of 23-4-2-0 and the Barons at 23-4-0-2. Kincardine’s third at 16-10-1-5.

The game was the first of three consecutive home games on the schedule for the Patriots. They’re to host Hanover Saturday at 8 p.m. and Goderich (2-25-1-2) Sunday at 2 p.m.
