Quick start helps Regals slip by Hamilton Bengals

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals scored twice in the first two and a half minutes of the game on their way to a 9-8 victory over the Hamilton Bengals in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Friday night at the Victoria Road arena.

While they grabbed the early lead in the game with those two goals, it was a pair of goals by Owen Orpana 63 seconds apart late in the first that put the Regals ahead for good.

While the Regals never trailed in the game, Hamilton tied it twice in the first period before Orpana’s pair of goals. The Regals led by as much as three goals, but Hamilton had the gap down to a single goal with a pair of unassisted power-play goals in the third, the second of that pair coming with 12:13 to go. However, the visitors never pulled even.

Guelph led 5-3 at the end of the first period and 7-5 after the second.

Orpana finished with three goals and four assists while Marcus Keleher had two goals and three assists and Zachary Wright had two goals and two assists. Parker Lock and Riley McLellan also scored while single assists were awarded to Sam MacDonald, Dylan Davey and McLellan.

Nathan Jones, Reed Allen and Noah Cupples each had two goals for Hamilton while Josh Lucas and Ben Dietrich added single goals. Alexander Long picked up two assists while Liam Luzza, Dietrich and Andrew Hamilton each had a single assist.

The Regals outshot the Bengals 59-38 and went 4-for-10 on their power play while Hamilton went 2-for-8.

Ty Fox-Trudel had 30 saves for the Regals while Trystan Williams had 50 for the Bengals.

Marcus Keleher of the Regals leads the league in scoring with 54 points (27 goals-27 assists), one point ahead of teammate Orpana (26 goals-27 assists) and Winter Rivera (29 goals-24 assists) of the Six Nations Rebels. Brinley Wilson (20 goals-27 assists) of the Elora Mohawks is fourth.

The result leaves the Regals all alone in third place in the Western Conference at 7-3-0. Six Nations leads at 10-0-0 while Elora is second at 8-1-0.

Following the Regals and having three games in hand are the St. Catharines Athletics at 6-1-0. Hamilton is at 6-4-0 and they’re followed by the Windsor Clippers at 5-2-0, Cambridge Highlanders at 4-5-0, Owen Sound Northstars at 2-5-0, London Blue Devils at 1-6-0, Wallaceburg Red Devils at 1-7-0 and the Point Edwards Pacers and Welland Generals both at 0-8-0.

The Regals are to play the Blue Devils at London’s Earl Nichols Recreation Centre Thursday at 8 p.m.
