Rally against Brock by Gryphon lacrosse men comes up short

ST. CATHARINES – A late comeback attempt by the Guelph Gryphons fell a little short as they were defeated 12-10 by the Brock Badgers in Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association play Friday at Brock’s Alumni Field.

The Badgers grabbed a three-goal lead in the first quarter and extended it to five goals early in the final quarter before the Gryphs mounted their comeback attempt.

However, neither team scored in the final two minutes of the game leaving the final gap at two goals.

Brock led 5-2 at the end of the first quarter, 7-4 at halftime and 10-6 at the end of the third quarter.

Gavin Thibeault had a hat trick for the Gryphs while Nicholas Volkov scored twice. Single goals were netted by Liam Aston, Matt Allen, Ben Doherty, Owen Kelly and Nolan Schott. Aston and Allen each had two assists while Kyle Detweiler and Julian Siragusa had one apiece.

Brodie Thoms recorded a hat trick for Brock while Colton Armitage and Andrew Kidd tallied twice apiece. Getting one goal each were Mitchell Zulian, Aidan Buis, Trent Hunter, Blair Pachereva and Noah Simonelli. Jaden Patterson had three assists while Zulian, Harrison Brooks and Callum Jeffrey each had one.

Shots on net were not recorded.

Jacob Hayne was in net for the Gryphs while Connor O’Toole and Adam Brown shared the goaltending chores for Brock. O’Toole allowed eight goals in 52:07 of play while Brown yielded the final two Guelph goals.

Western Mustangs lead the West Division at 6-0 while the Gryphs are second at 5-2. McMaster Marauders and Brock are both at 4-2 while Laurier Golden Hawks are at 4-3, Nipissing Lakers are at 2-6, Toronto Varsity Blues are at 1-5 and Laurentian Voyageurs are at 0-6.

The Gryphs have three games left on their regular-season schedule. They’re to play the Varsity Blues at Toronto Saturday at 1 p.m. and host McMaster at the Gryphon Soccer Complex Sunday at 1 p.m. They’re also to host Western Oct. 22 at 1 p.m.
