Regals ahead early, but fall to Rebels in series opener

HAGERSVILLE – The Guelph Regals jumped ahead early, but the Six Nations Rebels roared back to take the opening game of their best-of-five Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League Western Conference semifinal 15-8 Friday night at the Iroquois Lacrosse Arena.

The Regals led 3-1 with four minutes to go in the first period, but their hosts battled back to tie the score in the opening minute of the second period.

While the Regals led 3-2 at the end of the first period, they trailed 9-7 at the end of the second before the Rebels took control with five consecutive goals in the third.

Owen Orpana had a hat trick for the Regals while Dylan Goddard and Charlie Boon scored twice apiece. Marcus Keleher had the other goal and he also had three assists as did Parker Lock. Orpana and Boon each had two assists while single assists went to Goddard, Dylan Davey, Tyler Beecraft, Ethan Keleher and Dallon Evans.

Shako Swamp scored four times for Six Nations while Hodo (Eric) Martin had two goals and five assists. Anahilis Doxtador, Cole Powless and Damon Doxtatar also had two goals apiece and Keith Green, Macay Jimerson and Kaylem Whales Racette added single goals. Rakawineh Elijah picked up five assists while Colby Martin and goalkeeper Wesler Carew had two each and Ryan Hess, Connley Joe Squire, Doxtador, Richie Albert, Kevin Hill, Jimerson, Doxtatar and Swamp had one each.

Shots on net were not reported.

Anthony Fonte was in net for the Regals.

There were no power-play goals in the game that had few penalties – two minors for Guelph and four minors for Six Nations.

Second game of the series is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena.
