Regals clouted by Green Gaels in final preseason outing

The Guelph Regals surrendered a pair of nine-goal periods as they were dropped 18-7 by the Green Gaels in their final Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League preseason game Sunday at the Victoria Road arena.

The Clarington-based team led 9-1 at the end of the first period and 18-5 after the second period.

The Green Gaels scored the first nine goals of the game before the host Guelph side scored with 2:15 to go in the opening period.

Ben Morton scored twice for the Regals while Brett Vince, Tyler Beecraft, Sam Savery, Logan Reyes and Graeme Crowder added single goals. Dylan Davey collected four assists while Morton, Vince, Beecraft, Griffin Crowder, Caelan Brady and Dallon Evans each had one.

Alex Hicks had six goals and six assists for the Green Gaels while Kaleb Tatarek had four goals and two assists, Colton McNutt had two goals and six assists and Max MacPherson had two goals and four assists. Ryan Proctor, Zach Tucker, Eric Andrew and Bennett McLean each had a goal while single assists were awarded to Zach Pipher, Tucker, Andrew and Jacob Woo.

The Green Gaels outshot the Regals 53-35 and scored eight power-play goals and two shorthanded markers while the hosts had three power-play goals. The Regals were assessed

60 minutes in penalties including a pair of 10-minute misconducts while the Green Gaels took 42 minutes including two 10-minute misconducts.

Anthony Fonte and Connor Waller split the goaltending chores for the Regals with Fonte playing the first 30:52 and Waller finishing the game after coming into the game with the Green Gaels leading 15-4.

The Green Gaels changed goaltenders the same time as the Regals with Alan Arbuthnot taking over from starter Mason Robertson.

The Green Gaels scored their first five goals in the first eight minutes of the game. In the second period, the teams combined for nine goals in the period’s first 11 minutes.

The game was the first preseason outing for the Green Gaels and the fourth for the Regals.

The Regals are to open their regular season Sunday with a game against the Wallaceburg Red Devils at 3 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena.
