Regals, Mohawks deal for players for postseason

GUELPH – The Guelph Regals and Elora Mohawks both swung deals to bolster their rosters heading into the final week of the Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League’s regular season.

The Regals acquired offensive player Brett Vince from the Point Edward Pacers while the Mohawks got defender Phillip Papaevangelou from the Newmarket Saints and goaltender Carter Browne from the Brampton Excelsiors.

Vince, a 19-year-old from Sarnia, was Point Edward’s leading scorer with 29 goals and 19 assists in 17 games and was in his second full season with the winless Pacers.

While the Regals dealt with a fellow Western Conference squad, the Mohawks dealt with Eastern Conference teams Newmarket (1-17-0) from the Mid East Division and Brampton (4-11-1) from the South East Division.

Papaevangelou, a 20-year-old from Newmarket, had a goal and four assists in 17 games in his fourth season with the Saints. He had a goal and 12 assists in 64 total games with Newmarket and 133 minutes in penalties.

Browne, a 21-year-old from Milton, was Brampton’s No. 1 goalie in his first full season of junior B lacrosse. He had a 4-7-1 record with a 10.39 goals against average and .673 save percentage. He played in three games in junior B prior to this season, two with Brampton and one with the Halton Hills Bulldogs when he was playing junior C there.

Other deals involving Western Conference teams saw the Hamilton Bengals get 18-year-old offensive player Dawson Battersby (29 goals, 57 assists in 18 games) from the Welland Generals and St. Catharines Athletics get 20-year-old offensive player Avery Steinbach-Parker (21 goals, 19 assists in 13 games) from Welland.

The league’s regular season is to finish Monday.
