Regals run by St. Catharines to grab fourth-place finish

GUELPH – A four-goal run, three by Owen Orpana, in the second period sparked the Guelph Regals to a 9-6 victory over the St. Catharines Athletics in Ontario Junior B Lacrosse League play Monday at the Victoria Road arena.

The game completed the regular season for the Regals and left them in fourth place in the Western Conference.

The Regals actually finished in a tie with the Windsor Clippers, but were placed ahead of the Clippers due to a three-goal win over Windsor April 30 at Vic Road. The Clippers beat Guelph by a single goal in overtime in Windsor May 14.

The Regals and Clippers will meet in a best-of-five conference quarter-final playoff series.

St. Catharines secured a third-place finish in the league, one point ahead of the Regals and Clippers, with an 11-9 win over the Owen Sound North Stars in St. Catharines Sunday.

Monday, the Regals and Athletics were tied 3-3 at the end of the first period and Guelph led 7-5 at the end of the second. St. Catharines closed the gap to a single goal with a shorthanded marker early in the third, before the Regals added a pair of goals 32 seconds apart later in the period to complete the scoring in the game.

Orpana finished the game with five goals and two assists to finish his season with 101 points (52 goals-49 assists) and third in the scoring race behind teammate Marcus Keleher with 116 points (53-63) and Brinley Wilson of the Elora Mohawks with 105 points (48-57).

Orpana becomes the fourth Regal in team history to reach triple figures in scoring in a single season, Keleher was the third. It’s also the first time the Regals had two players collect more than 100 points in a single season.

Pat Martin was the first with 103 points (58-45) in 1997 and Jordan Godin was the second with 105 points (44-61) in 2012.

Dylan Goddard, Charlie Boon, Ethan Keleher and Dallon Evans netted single goals against St. Catharines while Marcus Keleher had five assists. Dylan Davey, Ethan Keleher and Evans each had two assists while Boon had one.

Jack Parker tallied twice for St. Catharines while single goals were added by Trent Mooradian, Levi Roest, Avery Steinbach-Parker and Ian Kohut. Goalkeeper Jarred JoeJoe Brant, Steinbach-Parker and Cody MacNeil each had two assists and Mitchell Pearson, Sutter Pilon, Mooradian, Kohut and Drew Kenney had one apiece.

The Regals outshot the Athletics 49-43 and both teams had a single power-play goal, Guelph on five power plays and St. Catharines on six.

Ty Fox-Trudel had 37 saves for the Regals and Brant had 40 for the Athletics.

Six Nations Rebels finished first in the conference with an unbeaten 20-0-0 record and were followed by the Elora Mohawks (17-3-0), St. Catharines (14-5-1), the Regals and Windsor (each at 14-6-0), Hamilton Bengals (10-9-1), Cambridge Highlanders and Owen Sound (each at 9-11-0) and those who didn’t qualify for the playoffs London Blue Devils and Wallaceburg Red Devils (each at 5-15-0), Welland Generals (2-18-0) and Point Edward Pacers (0-20-0).

Cambridge won the tiebreaker with Owen Sound.

Best-of-five conference quarter-finals that start this week pit Six Nations against Owen Sound, Elora against Cambridge, St. Catharines against Hamilton and Guelph against Windsor.
