Rocks dropped as Tillsonburg goes on five-goal spree

FERGUS – The Elora Rocks gave up five consecutive goals as they were downed 7-1 by the Tillsonburg Thunder in Western Ontario Super Hockey League play Friday night at the Centre Wellington Community Sportsplex.

After a scoreless first period, the Thunder jumped ahead 3-1 in the second period with one of their goals coming after Elora’s lone goal of the game. Tillsonburg added four more goals in the third.

Yianni Skropolis hit for a power-play goal for the Rocks with just over three and a half minutes to go in the middle frame. Shaun Pickering and Zack Cameron each had an assist.

All goals in the game came after the 11-minute mark of the second period.

Sheldon Thompson and Brandon Couto tallied twice apiece for Tillsonburg while Jamie MacQueen had a goals and three assists. Josh Vanbesien and Braden Roberts also scored while Austin Forsyth, Kyle Baker and Chris Nauts each had two assists. Single assists went to Anthony Geldart, Jayme Forslund and Kyle Brezinski.

The Thunder outshot the Rocks 44-27. The Rocks scored a power-play goal while the Thunder had a shorthanded marker.

Colin Dunne had 37 saves for Elora while Matt Sagrott had 26 for Tillsonburg.

The Thunder lead the league with a 13-1-0-1 record while the Rocks are eighth at 7-6-0-2.

The Rocks and Thunder are to meet again Saturday at the Tillsonburg Community Centre. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
