Ross, Centre Wellington advance to boys’ hockey final

GUELPH – The Ross Royals and Centre Wellington Falcons are to meet in the District 4/10 high school boys’ hockey league final Tuesday after both scored one-sided victories in semifinal play Friday.

The Royals dropped the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 9-2 at the Victoria Road arena while the Falcons blanked the Centennial Spartans 7-0 at Centennial arena.

Ross finished the regular season in first place at 11-1-0-0 (W-L-T-OTL) while Centre Wellington was sixth at 5-6-1-0. Centennial finished fifth at 6-5-0-1 and Bishop Mac was seventh at 2-9-0-1.

Ross defeated eighth-place Centre Dufferin 7-3 in an all-Royals quarter-final while the other three quarter-finals resulted in upsets as Bishop Mac defeated second-place St. James Lions 5-2, Centre Wellington ousted third-place Norwell Varsity Reds 4-1 and Centennial surprised fourth-place Orangeville Bears, the defending league champs, 3-1.

Tuesday’s final is slated for 2:30 p.m. at the Victoria Road arena. Winner moves on to the CWOSSA AAA tournament at the Woolwich Memorial Centre in Elmira March 4 and 5.

Bishop Mac and Norwell are to be the D4/10 league’s representatives in the CWOSSA A/AA tournament March 4 and 5 at the Delhi Community Arena and the Langton and Area Arena.
