Ross Royals hold Lourdes Crusaders back in senior hoops

GUELPH – The third quarter proved to be the difference as the Ross Royals slipped by the Lourdes Crusaders 36-30 in District 10 high school senior girls’ basketball play Thursday at Lourdes.

The Royals netted nine points in that quarter, but held their hosts scoreless as they extended a two-point lead at halftime into an 11-point advantage after the third quarter.

Lourdes came back in the fourth to narrow the gap to three points with just under five and a half minutes to play, but never did pull even.

The Royals led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter, 22-20 at halftime and 31-20 after the third quarter.

Sierra Curvan led Ross with 17 points while Sam Testfit Ezra added seven and Charlie Capper had six.

Olivia Doucette hit a trio of three-pointers to lead Lourdes. One was a desperation last-second shot at the end of the opening quarter while another started the fourth-quarter comeback attempt. Ciara Hayne, McKenna Codrington and Kayla Schous each had five points.

The win leaves Ross in third at 3-1, trailing the deadlocked undefeated duo of the Orangeville Bears and Centennial Spartans who are both at 4-0.
