Ross Royals nip Bishop Mac to rule D4/10 field hockey

GUELPH – The Ross Royals gained District 4/10 high school girls’ field hockey bragging rights Wednesday as they slipped by the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 2-1 in the league’s championship game at the Gryphon Soccer Complex.

The Royals hit early with a goal in the first five minutes and they added another one later in the opening half to carry a two-goal lead into the second half.

However, the Celtics turned up the pressure in the second half and were rewarded with a goal midway through the half.

Amber Spira and Cecilia Lee scored a goal apiece for Ross.

Samara Carmody had the goal for Bishop Mac.

The championship win was the first for Ross since before the break for the pandemic as the Royals had last lifted the championship plaque in 2019.

The win also returned the plaque to Guelph as the Orangeville Bears won it last year and the Centre Dufferin Royals of Shelburne won it in 2021.

Both Ross and Bishop Mac advance to next week’s CWOSSA championship tournament at Woodside Park in Kitchener.

The Royals are to compete in Pool B of the CWOSSA tournament along with the District 8 champion St. David Celtics of Waterloo and the District 6/11 runners-up, either Waterloo-Oxford Crusaders of Baden or the Bluevale Knights of Waterloo.

Bishop Mac is to compete in Pool A along with the Assumption College Lions of Brantford and the D6/11 champs, either Waterloo-Oxford or Bluevale.

Pool play is set for next Wednesday with the top two teams in each pool advancing to the final four Thursday.
